Hermitage Residence

A dark shell meets a light-filled interior

Project Type: New Construction
Partner Type: Project Architect & Construction Manager
Location: Chicago
Partner: Norsman Architects

Tasked with standing out on a sub-standard lot, this modern stucco and sheet metal residence achieved its goal. The hints of warmth at the front entry and side court allude to the bright, clean lines of the interior. The combination of whitewashed pine and oak combined with stark black also provided a not-so-subtle series of contrasts that made the home fresh and inviting upon entering. Alongside the utilitarian, old world craft of stucco, the sheet metal accenting and perforated railings inside and out provided a rich level of detail. Designed and built with Norsman Architects and its construction arm, House Plant, Inc.
