Another over-under ADU conversion, this 2-unit greystone took advantage of a high-ceiling basement with numerous windows to provide a new living space for the family. Where most traditional Chicago 2-flats are based around a 2-bedroom plan on the main level, this renovation utilized one of the bedrooms for an expanded kitchen while the other become the highly in-demand home office. Shifting the sleeping quarters to the basement also provided for an expanded den space in addition to the more formal living room at the front of the house. Modernizing the utilities to be more in line with a single-family, the addition of efficient radiant floors in the basement brought a ‘comfort below grade’ to our harsh Midwest winters.
